Job Description and Duties


This position works under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officers (Firefighter/Security Officer and Ranger K9 Handlers), and the Public Safety Superintendent. The reporting location is the Day Security office at Hearst Castle. The general duties of this position are to assist in providing for the safety and protection of the visitors, employees, resources and property of Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument. Shifts may vary depending on the season. Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument is open 7 days a week, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Shift schedules vary and include weekends and some evenings. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Visitor Assistance:
- Assisting Hearst Castle visitors as needed.  Some typical needs include escorting parents and children to quiet area, restroom calls, locating lost items and escorting visitors off tour that cannot negotiate the tour route.
- Evaluates potential first aid situations and calls Firefighter/Security Officers or Rangers for assistance when appropriate.
- Assist with tours and accessibly designed tours as needed.
- Provides van transportation for visitors as needed and directed.
- Security and Fire Prevention.
- Responds to fire alarms.
- Reminds visitors using tact and diplomacy the tour rules when necessary to assure compliance.
- Provides security for special events.
- Performs close-down procedures on tour routes.
- Assists as directed in any emergency situation.

Independent Study and Assignments:
- Utilizes non-break time between tours to stay familiar with fire extinguisher, security lighting and alarm locations.
- Assist in maintaining Day Security equipment such as security lighting, vehicles and medical aid supplies.

Facility Housekeeping:
- Performs routine housekeeping tasks as necessary to properly maintain the Day Security Office.

Physical Requirements:
-Moderate physical activity, that includes climbing stairs, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, squatting, bending, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying and at times on uneven and slippery surfaces.

Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKS program.  Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKS recipient in the comments area on the application.  Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKS eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub.  If verification is not submitted with the application, the application will not be processed.
