Job Description and Duties


The reporting locations for this position are at the RTR facilities at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Orick, CA and Humboldt Redwoods State Park near Weott, CA.  The Senior Maintenance Aide position works under the supervision of the Sector Park Maintenance Supervisor of the Roads, Trails and Resources Maintenance Section (RTR) of the North Coast Redwoods District (NCRD).

As part of their normal duties persons assigned to this position may be required to report to specific project sites located throughout the NCRD.  When working at remote sites within the District, or working outside of the District, they may be required to stay at spike camp facilities. The normal working hours are 7:00am to 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday; however, emergencies, special projects and project efficiency may require working weekends and holidays.

This position performs a wide variety of semi-skilled trail construction work including: trail layout and design, trail tread construction, brushing, logging out, trio maintenance, drainage structure construction, bridge construction, retaining wall construction, safety railing constructing, turn piking and drain lens construction, multi-tier rock wall, rock rip-rap, open rock culverts, etc.  This position is responsible for setting up and taking down spike camp operations.  This position is required to lead safety training and develop task and resource hazard analyses.   Essential functions for these duties include the ability to walk (0-5 miles one-way), carry (0-5 miles), lift 0-50 pounds, chop, swing, comprehend, and push, pull.  Must be able to cope with noxious plants, dust, noise, uneven ground, and an outdoor environment.  Must possess manual dexterity. This position performs minor repairs, service, and sharpens all chain saws, brush cutters, gas operated drills, generators, power equipment, grip hoists, rigging, and hand tools assigned to the trails program. This position instructs lower-level seasonal employees on the safe and proper use of tools and tool maintenance. Equipment requiring major repairs is to be properly tagged and promptly sent out for repairs. This position maintains an adequate inventory of repair parts saw chains, tool handles, etc., so that repairs are promptly accomplished. Essential functions for these duties are the ability to comprehend, carry, walk, squat, grip, push/pull, drag, bend, lift, and to possess dexterity.

Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWorks program.
