***This is a Peace Officer Position. To be eligible, you must meet the minimum qualifications established by the Department of Human Resources AND either be currently eligible or eligible for reinstatement as a PC 830.2, California State Peace Officer. The reporting location for this position is Clear Lake SP in Kelseyville. This position will work under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger). This position is for a canine officer. This vacancy is available to current Canine Handlers. If no current Canine Handlers apply, the vacancy will be open to those interested in becoming Canine Handlers under the Canine Handler Selection Process. Interested Canine and non-Canine Handlers should both apply at this time. A supplemental application process will be required for all non-Canine Handler applicants. Candidates that will be eligible for selection to the Canine Program by the final filing date are encouraged to apply. The incumbent will be expected to maintain Canine certification and training.

This position will be responsible for the full range of public safety and law enforcement, campground operations, visitor services, interpretation and resource management activities within the Clear Lake Sector, which includes Clear Lake SP and Anderson Marsh SHP. Clear Lake SP is located 3.5 miles northeast of Kelseyville. The park has four campgrounds with a total of 146 campsites, two group camps, eight park operated cabins, several miles of hiking trails, a visitor center, and a boat launch. Anderson Marsh SHP is located between Lower Lake and Clearlake. This unit contains archeological sites of Southeastern Pomo that are at least 10,000 years old as well as a 19th century ranch house and barn complex. There is also a nature preserve that covers hundreds of acres of wildlife habitat.

The incumbent will be expected to complete the annual POST K-9 team evaluation. This vacancy is available to current Canine Handlers who must have completed the annual POST K-9 team evaluation and have met the Department standards as required in the Canine Handler Handbook. Please provide proof of eligibility with application. If no current Canine Handlers apply, the vacancy will be open to those interested in becoming Canine Handlers under the Canine Handler selection process. Working Conditions

Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, loud noises, inclement weather, in old/abandoned structures and around sewage/trash.  Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.  Ability to work in a variety of environments including cold, windy, wet, and muddy conditions along lakes, creek banks, wetlands, rocks, brush, etc.  Ability to work in hot, dry, muggy or unpleasant conditions.  Typical work activities involve frequent and prolonged periods of standing and walking, as well as prolonged periods of driving.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
Compliance and current certification in peace officer required trainings, including: physical agility testing, defensive tactics, firearms qualification and emergency medical responder.  Possession of a Class C California driver's license and a good driving record.  Completion and maintenance of K9 Handler qualifications.  Care and maintenance for K9 patrol dog, including proper nutrition, veterinary care, housing, grooming, exercise, clean up and other needs.
