Job Description and Duties

The Division of Safety of Dams is responsible for evaluating the performance of existing jurisdictional dams; reviewing and approving inundation maps, applications for the construction of new dams, as well as the alteration, enlargement, repair, and abatement of existing jurisdictional dams in California.  Under general direction of the Principal Engineer, Water Resources in the Re-Evaluation Engineering Branch of the Division of Safety of Dams, the Supervising Engineer, Water Resources, will plan, lead, manage, and review complex projects related to the Division’s Focused Re-evaluation Program and Inundation Map Program.  Limited travel is sometimes necessary.

This position requires that the incumbent work cooperatively with Division staff, dam owners, consultants, and the public.  Must have excellent communication and technical skills;
exercise good engineering judgment; and maintain consistent, regular, and predictable attendance.  Ideal candidates should have expertise in in multiple civil engineering disciplines including hydrology, hydraulics, soil mechanics, risk engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and earthquake engineering, with extensive knowledge and experience in engineering analyses of dams and their appurtenances, including risk informed decision-making for dam safety evaluation of these structures.
