Job Description and Duties

The Division of Safety of Dams is responsible for evaluating the performance of existing jurisdictional dams, the review and approval of inundation maps for failure of dams and their critical appurtenant structures, and the review of applications for the construction of new dams as well as the alteration, enlargement, repair, and abatement of existing jurisdictional dams in California. Under the general direction of a Supervising Engineer, the Senior Engineer, Water Resources will be responsible for highly technical and complex job assignments related to the re-evaluation and repair of dams. The incumbent will plan, lead and perform inundation map review, risk-based evaluations, engineering analyses, field inspections, and studies for risk reduction measures. Limited travel is sometimes necessary.

This position requires that the incumbent work cooperatively with Division staff, dam owners, consultants, and the general public. Must have excellent communication skills, exercise good judgment, and maintain consistent, regular, and predictable attendance. Ideal candidates should have an extensive knowledge and experience in engineering analysis of dams and their appurtenances, including the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and surveillance monitoring of these structures. Having experience in hydrologic and hydraulic studies as well as structural and geotechnical engineering fields is desirable.
