Under the direction of the Education Administrator I of the Standards Implementation Support Office (SISO) and the Director of the Educator Excellence and Equity Division, and working cooperatively with program units throughout the California Department Of Education (CDE), the Education Programs Consultant (EPC) works as a team leader, team member, and/or independently in assigned areas of responsibility or projects to support the development and dissemination of educational programs that support the implementation of California’s Computer Science Standards (CSS) and the Computer Science Strategic Implementation Plan (CSSIP), as well as high-quality professional learning for educators that advance student learning. The SISO is responsible for ensuring that every California student has equitable access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and computer science education provided by highly prepared teachers and leaders. The EPC will:

  • Provide guidance, technical assistance, and respond to field inquiries that promote the implementation of the CSS and the CSSIP. Develop and expand Department web resources related to computer science education for use by the field. Draft correspondence for the signature of managers and develop talking points. Disseminate research and best practices in computer science education.
  • Conduct workshops and presentations to promote the implementation of the CSS and the CSSIP for various audiences at local, regional, and statewide meetings and conferences. Respond to questions regarding the CSS and the CSSIP from administrators, teachers, CDE staff, and the general public.
  • Conduct, compile, and interpret research as required to meet unit and departmental responsibilities, and to advance the computer science education in California. Develop, review, analyze, and interpret state and federal statutes, administrative regulations, policy documents, departmental procedures, and applicable research in the field of computer science education. Prepare and recommend changes in legislation, regulations, and policies to facilitate the expansion of computer science education in California.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Knowledge and understanding of computer science education, particularly in the areas of professional learning, curriculum and instruction. Experience teaching kindergarten through grade twelve (K–12) students, computer science concepts. Familiarity with California’s CSS and the CSSIP. Experience working with school districts, county offices of education, and professional development providers. Excellent communication abilities (both written and verbal), strong public-speaking and presentation skills, and good organizational habits are all essential.

Statement of Qualifications
