Job Description and Duties

The Central Valley Flood Protection Board (CVFPB) is a regulatory agency underneath the umbrella of the California Natural Resources Agency. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) provides administrative support to the CVFPB, including the advertisement of vacancies. The CVFPB is separate from DWR and operates under independent authorities, roles, and responsibilities.  The CVFPB is a legislatively mandated permitting and enforcement entity, charged with overseeing flood project construction and public safety within the Central Valley floodways and levee systems, as well as with the review, adoption and implementation of the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan.  More information about the CVFPB organization and mission may be viewed at http://cvfpb.ca.gov .

 

The Board is recruiting for a Student Assistant to assist the Board’s engineering staff with technical analysis, documentation, reports, and database management.  The Student Assistant will provide support for review of engineering design documents and calculations, update information of permit database, assist in information gathering for permit application review, checking for conformance to Board and US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) regulation compliance.  The Student will utilize software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google Earth, and USACE and Board Oracle databases; will support database management efforts by performing quality assurance, analysis and data entry.  May accompany engineering staff to meetings and assist creation of with staff reports and presentations for senior staff to use at meetings.

Special Requirements

All applicants for Student Assistant positions must meet the following departmental eligibility requirements:

 

  1. Enrolled in nine (9) semester/eight (8) quarter units for undergraduate students or six (6) semester/four (4) quarter units for graduate students.  
  2. Achieved a 2.0 grade point average in the most recently completed academic term.
  3. Declared a major related to the duties of the advertised position and enrolled in coursework required for that major.

 

Must be able to work during the school year and during summer and winter breaks.  Must possess a valid California’s driver’s license.

We are seeking qualified candidates who with an interest in engineering and flood safety.  Successful candidates will display a positive attitude, and good communication skills, both orally and in writing.  Student must be enrolled in Civil Engineering coursework.
