Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant Attorney General (SAAG), the Chief Assistant Attorney General (CAAG), the Chief of the Division of Legal Affairs, the Chief Deputy to the Attorney General, and the Attorney General, the Supervising Deputy Attorney General (SDAG) assigns, directs, monitors, and supervises the work of a legal team of Deputy Attorneys General (DAG) and paralegals; directs the work of support staff; evaluates the performance of DAGs and paralegals; provides training for subordinate legal staff; resolves problems among and implements improvement measures for subordinate legal staff; handles general administrative matters; actively participates in the interview and selection process for hiring DAGs and paralegals; develops and maintains good client relations with client agencies and ensures staff service levels are designed to timely meet the objectives and priorities of these clients; has the ability to personally perform and will guide the most difficult and complex legal work in cannabis licensing litigation requiring the highest level of independent judgment in administrative hearings, and state and federal court civil litigation, trials, review proceedings, and appeals. Other duties may include, but are not limited to: acting as the lead attorney or supervising a trial team assigned to the most difficult and complex cases; appearing before various federal and state courts and administrative bodies on the most difficult and sensitive cases, and may appear in the highest levels of the appellate courts; advising various legal jurisdictions, public officials, and representatives of public agencies on legal issues; conducting or supervising special investigations of the most sensitive or difficult nature; and drafting and analyzing legislative measures and regulations.

Desirable Qualifications

  • The incumbent should be able to demonstrate good judgment and tact when interacting with staff and clients, have initiative, strong case management and organizational skills, be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, have the ability to work under pressure and work effectively with all levels of staff, and be creative and resourceful problem solvers. 
  • The incumbent should be able to demonstrate experience or ability to provide, organized, detail-oriented, hands-on leadership, supervision, direction, training, and mentorship to a team of legal professionals that includes deputies and that may include paralegals; assist and monitor subordinate attorneys, paralegals, and support staff in planning for and carrying out the most complex and difficult work; review all work product to ensure that it is substantively and stylistically accurate and appropriate; plan and coordinate the distribution of work; assist and strategize with deputies to develop case plans; and ensure that deputies are appropriately, productively, and efficiently handling their cases. 
  • The incumbent should be able to demonstrate experience or ability to review and analyze the monthly ProLaw and management reports; ensure that deputies’ ProLaw case management and calendaring are accurate, appropriate, and up-to-date; and review deputies’ and paralegals’ ProLaw timekeeping entries to ensure appropriate and accurate billing and working efficiency. Handle a variety of general administrative and employee matters; evaluate the performance of deputies, paralegals, and support staff in probation reports and annual performance appraisals; provide positive recognition; and where appropriate, undertake progressive disciplinary action against subordinates; identify areas of growth for deputies and paralegals and work collaboratively with human resources staff to obtain the necessary training and instruction to address those areas of growth; and recruit, interview, and select, or actively participate in the interview and selection process for deputies and paralegals. Work cooperatively and strategically with other Supervising Deputies to ensure proper and consistent management of teams and overall efficient deployment of resources. Maintain knowledge of and, where necessary, apply bargaining unit MOU rules, department rules, civil service laws, and regulations. Undertake special projects assigned by the Senior Assistant. 
  • The incumbent should be able to demonstrate experience or ability to perform the most difficult cannabis-related legal work—often as the lead attorney—requiring the highest level of independent judgment; personally handle cannabis licensing litigation, writs, and appeals; administrative law knowledge and experience, and civil litigation experience; appear before various federal and state courts and administrative bodies on the most difficult and sensitive cannabis-related cases, and the highest levels of the appellate courts.  Advise various legal jurisdictions, public officials, and representatives of public agencies on cannabis legal issues; conduct or supervise special investigations of the most sensitive or difficult nature; and draft and analyze legislative measures and regulations.
