Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Deputy Labor Commissioner Ill, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, Bureau of Field Enforcement Unit (BOFE):

Conducts audits to verify and determine correct wages and payroll in accordance with applicable California Labor Codes and Industrial Welfare Commission Orders. Audits involve gathering, examining and reviewing of employers' time and payroll records in an effort to uncover and prove wage theft; computing total hours worked; extracting payroll data; and, reconstructing incomplete and/or missing records to establish facts regarding hours worked and payments made.  Computes unpaid wages such as minimum wage, overtime, commissions, and bonuses, and non-wages such as uniforms, mileage, tips, tools, and illegal deductions.

Conducts the more difficult and comprehensive reviews and audits in an effort to uncover and prove wage theft. Develop audit plans and execute the audits according to the approved plan. Monitor audit schedule and scope. Review audits for compliance and accuracy. Complete and submit audit reports. Calculate and prepare reports, audit findings, and recommendations which are submitted to the Deputy Labor Commissioner III with audit development and all supporting information.

May accompany deputies into the field to conduct audits, review and analyze employer's time and payroll records, and document all needed information. Conducts interviews with employers, employees, their representatives, and others involved in the payroll process. Prepare accurate audit reports and related recommendations for audit assessments.  May assist deputies in presenting the audit and testifying at hearings for the Division.

Conducts the more difficult and complex audits on cases involving criminal violation issues, and performs Public Information Duty (PID) and other duties as appropriately required. Assists in training new auditors.

Work is performed both in field and office settings. Frequent use of computer and related software applications at a workstation. Uses automated audit programs utilized by the Division's BOFE Unit.
