Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Office of Community and Consumer Affairs Director, the Staff Services Manager II, Specialist, (SSM II) is responsible for directing the Department of Justice’s Office of Native American Affairs (ONAA). The ONAA advises the Attorney General and the Department of Justice (DOJ) on matters of tribal importance and ensuring that tribal governments and community leaders are given the opportunity to cooperate with the state on justice-related matters of mutual concern. The SSM II will provide DOJ with perspective on any agency programs, or proposed legislation that may potentially impact tribal and state reciprocity. The incumbent is expected to mitigate tribal issues and communicate with the Attorney General on such issues. Travel will be required.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Ability to establish and maintain relationships between California’s Indian tribes, tribal organizations, Indian citizens and DOJ. The incumbent must exercise a high degree of initiative, have excellent communications (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, strong presentation skills, ability to work in a team-oriented environment and manage projects that require input from multiple staff that are cross-divisional. Other desirable skills include being detail-oriented, able to adjust to changing priorities, able to work well under pressure and able use good judgment and flexibility in performing a wide variety of duties. Incumbent will see connections and opportunities for collaboration with diverse partners and will be comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint is highly desired.
