Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Legal Office Administrator and the immediate supervision of a Legal Support Supervisor (LSS) II, the LSS I will supervise approximately 5 to 15 legal secretaries and other support staff, including Docketing Unit personnel, providing a variety of secretarial services to a professional staff of attorneys and paralegals. The LSS I is responsible for establishing and maintaining positive working relationships and effective communication between professional and support staff. The incumbent maintains attendance records and approve absences, overtime and leave usage requests; prepares probationary reports and annual performance appraisals for employees; initiates, prepares, reviews, and recommends appropriate personnel actions and participates in corrective interviews as needed; recruits, reviews, interviews, and recommends the hiring of new employees; provides orientation and/or training for new employees; and attends and conducts team meetings. The LSS I will directly perform difficult and responsible secretarial tasks and other duties for one or more attorneys or other professional staff and, when necessary, perform case management tasks and back up secretarial or Docket Unit team members in the performance of duties during their absences. The LSS I establishes and maintains standardized procedures for preparation of all legal documents and correspondence; answers a variety of inquiries from professional and support staff on procedural aspects of processing legal actions; implemenst and reinforces office policies and procedures; and informs secretarial and support staff of changes accordingly.
