Job Description and Duties

The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board has an opening for a Scientific Aid in the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program. The position is located at 895 Aerovista Place, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.

Currently registered students or recent graduates in relevant scientific fields (i.e., engineering, geology, hydrology, or environmental science) are encouraged to apply. Relevant coursework in water resources engineering, geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, data management, and water chemistry is desirable.

Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist, and consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the State and Regional Board’s Strategic Plan, the incumbent is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal/external customers, follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal/external customer input when completing work assignments.Specific duties include:


  • Assist technical staff with reviewing report submittals and monitoring data to determine compliance with applicable requirements.

  • Assist technical staff with tracking monitoring and reporting submittals.

  • Assist technical staff with preparation of formal and informal enforcement documents; verify validity of violations; and provide technical support to Board staff project managers.

  • Provide program support including data entry; spatial data analysis; file inventory and maintenance; and answering phone calls from the public regarding basic routine program related issues.

  • Participate in meetings with agencies, regulated individuals, consultants, the public and others, and conduct general outreach and education.

  • Perform other duties as required within the scope of knowledge and abilities expected of a Scientific Aid.

The State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) and the nine (9) Regional Water Quality Control Boards (RWQCB) (collectively the Water Boards) work to preserve, enhance, and restore the quality of California’s water resources and drinking water for the protection of the environment, public health, and all beneficial uses, and to ensure proper water resource allocation and efficient use, for the benefit of present and future generations.

  • Knowledge of the Water Board’s regulatory authority, programs and policies.

  • Knowledge of the Central Coast region’s geography, climate, surface waterbodies, groundwater basins, water quality impairments and emerging issues.

  • Knowledge of conducting water quality data analyses, including statistical analysis.

  • Knowledge of conducting spatial data analysis using geographic information systems and preparing maps.

  • Knowledge of database entry and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to work independently or cooperatively to complete work assignments.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
