Job Description and Duties

Due to the COVID 19 Emergency, the drop off location is closed. Please submit your application electronically or via email. 

Under the general direction of the Inspector III (Supervisor), the Inspector is responsible for conducting targeted, initial and random inspections of establishments, preparing inspection reports and participating in legal proceedings pertaining to inspections.

This position is in Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Counties.  The incumbent’s residence will be their designated office headquarters.  The inspector will conduct inspections in their assigned area but may be required to travel anywhere in the state.

Working Conditions

This position works a minimum of 40 hours per week with approximately 75% of their time in the field which includes remaining in a stationary position and driving. During inspections the incumbent will need the ability to walk reasonable distances, bend, stoop, reach and may have to work in small spaces. The incumbent is supplied a state vehicle and the necessary equipment, tools and supplies to conduct inspections as well as the necessary equipment for a home office to generate reports and complete paperwork. The inspector may occasionally be exposed to strong odors of chemicals used in salons.

Travel by state vehicle within an assigned area is required on a daily basis.  Travel by state vehicle or other public transportation systems to various locations throughout the state may be required on an occasional basis. Weekend, evening work, odd and irregular hours, and overtime may be required.  This position may require overnight travel.

Do you enjoy a fast-paced workplace?  Are you looking to get outside the walls of your cubicle?  The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (Board) is looking for  highly motivated individuals with excellent customer service skills to become Salon Inspectors. Inspectors are assigned a state vehicle and work in the field conducting daily inspections of licensed and unlicensed establishments.

The mission of the Board is to ensure the health and safety of California consumers by promoting ethical standards and by enforcing the laws of the barbering and beauty industry.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
  • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.

Effective July 1, 2020, in response to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2020 (PLP 2020).
